The Virus That Stole Christmas

December 26, 2009

We have been sick. So very, very sick.

About a week before Christmas, my school-aged daughter came home with viral gastroenteritis. It worked its way through all of us, and we spent eight days holding small children over buckets and toilets while they emptied themselves. Sometimes all night. It was awful.

The food I had bought before our eight-day festival of vomit spoiled from neglect. Two eggplants, a pineapple, a half-gallon of buttermilk – ingredients for meals planned but never cooked. Instead, those of us who could eat ate store-bought food and take-out, and we were grateful if it stayed down.

Our stomachs are gradually returning to their normal healthy condition, and we will begin cooking real food soon. As soon as we can hold down something other than packaged bagels.

That is so awful. This will truly go down in the annals as the Christmas best forgotten. You may laugh at it someday, but it will always be wry. Here’s to hoping you enjoy a very dry, uneventful, healthy New Year’s.

“Festival of vomit”–you may have beaten Festivus for an alternate holiday. I hope you are all better very soon!

Oh no! So sorry. My family had a festival like that once–we refer to it as The Barforama (even though it was really both ends). Hope you’re all feeling completely well soon.

We’ve all been sick, too. Here’s to a happy, healthy new year.
